This day trip takes you on the Tahune Forest Airwalk – a cantilevered bridge that allows you to walk through the treetops 40 metres above the ground – then on to the Hasting Caves for a swim in the thermal pools and a spectacular underground cave tour.

Sitting 50 metres above the Huon River, the Tahune Airwalk is a fun and thrilling adventure walk. After enjoying a bird’s eye view of the world, we then head underground to explore the mysterious labyrinth of caves beneath the forests of southern Tasmania.

Tahune Adventures and Hastings Caves are located south of Hobart, in one of Tasmania’s most scenic regions. The journey takes you through the picturesque Huon Valley, following the Huon River and passing through rolling farmlands and fruit orchards, all framed by views of the World Heritage-listed wilderness.

The first stop for the day is Tahune Forest Adventures, where a series of elevated and ground-level walks offer an incredible introduction to Tasmania’s southern forests. Begin with a gentle uphill walk, climbing 104 forested steps to reach the start of the iconic AirWalk. This 619-metre-long structure stretches through the treetops, culminating at a cantilevered platform suspended 50 metres above the Huon River. From here, take in sweeping views across the forest canopy and the surrounding World Heritage Wilderness Area—an unforgettable experience.

For those keen on more adventure, continue along the circuit walk at ground level. The Swinging Bridges Track features two suspension bridges: the first spans 100 metres across the Huon River, offering a fun and thrilling crossing, followed shortly by a second 60-metre bridge over the Picton River—perfect for scenic photos and a bit of excitement.

Prefer something a little gentler? The 20-minute Huon Pine Walk is a peaceful option along the riverbank. This short trail showcases the world’s most accessible stand of Huon Pines—ancient, slow-growing trees, some of which are estimated to be up to 2,500 years old.

The journey continues further south to the quiet and remote Hastings Caves Reserve, a serene setting with a range of relaxing and immersive experiences. Bring your swimwear for a dip in the Thermal Springs Pool, naturally heated to a comfortable 28°C all year round. Facilities include changing rooms and hot showers. Alternatively, stroll the Hot Springs Nature Trail, where warm and cool water streams merge—dip a hand in to feel the contrast. Keep an eye out for the elusive platypus, a shy but playful inhabitant of these waters.

The final highlight of the day is the 45-minute guided tour of Newdegate Cave, led by the expert team at Hastings Caves Reserve. Inside, the temperature is a consistent 9°C, so be sure to bring a warm layer. While the cave is spacious and without tight passages, it does involve navigating numerous stairs. During the tour, your guide will explain the cave’s fascinating history, geology, and the formation of its unique limestone features.

On the return journey to Hobart, there’s a chance to stop at roadside stalls to sample or purchase fresh seasonal produce—cherries, berries, apples, ice creams—and even enjoy a honey tasting. (Please note that these stops are seasonal and may vary depending on operating hours.)

Arrival back in Hobart is expected between 5:30 and 6:00 pm.
