Itinerary

Discover the wild beauty of New Zealand’s West Coast on a full-day sightseeing tour from Queenstown to Franz Josef.

Departing from Queenstown, travel in a luxury coach through some of the South Island’s most scenic landscapes. Along the way, your driver guide will provide engaging commentary as you pass the crystal-clear waters of Lake Dunstan, Lake Wanaka, and Lake Hawea.

After a morning tea stop in Makarora, located on the edge of Mount Aspiring World Heritage Park (own expense), continue through the dramatic Haast Pass. Journey through native beech forest as you cross the Southern Alps before emerging on the rugged West Coast. This remote region is known for its untouched rainforests, powerful waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks.

Follow the coastline to witness waves crashing against rocky beaches, then head inland past tree-lined lakes. Stop at a boutique salmon farm on the Paringa River for lunch (own expense) before arriving in the afternoon at Franz Josef Village.

From here, enjoy free time to explore the famous Franz Josef Glacier, located within Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The glacier stretches approximately 12 kilometres and was named by German explorer Julius von Haast after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. During your time in Franz Josef, you may choose to explore the area independently, join a guided glacier walk, or take an optional scenic flight by helicopter or small aircraft (at additional cost).

Tour Schedule

• 7:55am – Check in with your driver/guide at Athol Street Bus Stop (middle of the car park), Queenstown
• 8:10am – Coach departs Athol Street, Queenstown
• 11:00am – Arrive in Makarora for a rest break (30 minutes, morning tea at own expense)
• 2:15pm – Arrive at Salmon Farm Tea Rooms for lunch (own expense)
• 2:50pm – Depart Salmon Farm Tea Rooms
• 4:15pm – Arrive in Franz Josef Village (Main Road bus stop)
