Witnessing the Monkey Mia dolphins firsthand is a truly unforgettable emotional experience, one that visitors and their families will treasure for years to come. One way to reach this world-famous destination is by driving the 401 kilometres from Kalbarri (a journey of around four and a half hours), staying overnight, and then returning the same way the following day. That means two full days out of a holiday schedule, extensive driving, and considerable expense.
The best way to experience Monkey Mia is by air. Flying takes just one hour, allowing visitors to arrive refreshed and ready to interact with the dolphins and enjoy several relaxed hours with these beautiful creatures on the beach. This option offers exceptional value, saves both time and money, and delivers a far more impactful overall experience.
After an early morning take-off, the flight heads north, low and parallel to the coastline, passing the impressive and dramatic Zuytdorp Cliffs where a Dutch merchant ship was wrecked in 1712. At low tide and in calm conditions, the ribs of the shipwreck can still be seen through the clear water. The journey continues past Womerangee Hill, the highest point along this section of coastline at 900 feet.
Flying below cliff level provides close-up, spectacular views, allowing every detail of the rugged coastline to be appreciated. After overflying the peninsula, the deep blue ocean gradually transitions into the lighter, shallow waters of Shark Bay before landing at Denham Airport. A short taxi transfer leads to Monkey Mia, where there is approximately two and a half hours to enjoy the white sand beaches, shallow waters, and the sight of dolphins happily frolicking and being fed.
At 9:45 am, guests board a yacht cruise for a wildlife journey across Monkey Mia Bay. Wildlife can be observed from the dry deck, through underwater viewing windows, or from the Boomnet for those wanting a wet ride (swimwear is recommended). Food and beverage options are available on board at an additional cost.
After returning from the yacht tour, there is time to purchase lunch in Monkey Mia (at own expense) before returning to the airport.
The return flight travels via Bluff Point, with arrival back in Kalbarri by mid-afternoon.
Many visitors comment that there is so much to see and do in and around Kalbarri that spending two days driving to Monkey Mia and back feels like a missed opportunity. This flight offers the perfect alternative to a long, repetitive drive and is therefore one of the most popular and frequently booked experiences.
