Sitting tranquilly amidst English oaks and gardens, Port Arthur is a harsh contrast to the beauty of the Tasman Peninsula.
Departing from Hobart, the journey begins with views of Government House, the official residence of the Governor of Tasmania. Travel across the Tasman Bridge, spanning the Derwent River, and continue into the Coal River Valley, an award-winning wine-producing region that surrounds the historic town of Richmond.
An orientation drive through Richmond offers a glimpse into its charming colonial heritage, with a short stop for photos at the iconic convict-built Richmond Bridge, Australia’s oldest surviving bridge of its kind.
Heading towards the Tasman Peninsula, the landscape transforms into natural bushland, rich in native wildlife and dramatic coastal scenery. Skirt along Norfolk Bay and arrive at Eaglehawk Neck, where the rugged coastline unfolds. Along the way, pass through Doo Town, a quirky seaside village famous for its pun-filled house names.
In Tasman National Park, stop at the pristine Pirates Bay, where panoramic ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and striking rock formations create a breathtaking photo opportunity.
Upon arrival at the Port Arthur Historic Site, spend approximately five hours exploring this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, which evokes a powerful sense of Australia's convict past and early settlement heritage.
Highlights include:
Entry to the Interpretation Centre, offering insight into the lives and struggles of convicts through immersive exhibits
Expert-led site talks exploring the many restored buildings and ruins
Visits to key landmarks such as the Penitentiary, Separate Prison, Commandant’s House, church, and more
A scenic cruise on Carnarvon Bay is included, providing unique views of the site and access to the Isle of the Dead. A walking tour of the Isle offers a deeper, more personal understanding of the lives, hardships, and stories of those buried there.
There is free time to purchase lunch at your leisure and explore the grounds at your own pace. For those interested, there is also a complimentary visit to Remarkable Caves—a dramatic sea cave and coastal lookout—available upon request; simply ask the driver/guide on the day.
To round off the experience, stop at the Chocolate Foundry on the return journey to sample or purchase locally made sweet treats.
Return to Hobart in the early evening, with the stories and scenery of Port Arthur etched in memory.
