What you’ll do

Depart the mainland

Your trip will begin at Hillarys Boat Harbour where the ferry departs. The harbour is located around 25 minutes northwest of Perth CBD and is easily reached by car or train and bus from both Fremantle and Perth.

However, this ferry includes hotel transfers from a number of hotels in the Perth city centre, which is great if you don't have access to a car nor do you want to navigate your way around the public transport system.

As you’re boarding, the crew will hoist your bikes onto the deck and scan your ticket so if you're wanting to explore the island by bike you'll be able to get your gear over quite easily.

Once on board, you’ll notice the majority of seating is inside but there are two sections outside. If you’re like me, you’d much rather be out in the fresh air, enjoying the best of the view.

Cruise over to Rottnest

Luckily for us, the swell for the day was moderate so the ride was pretty smooth. My number one tip would be to make sure you check the forecast so that if there are large swells you can prepare yourself and take seasickness tablets beforehand.

The ride over to the island went by quickly and I’d say it was approximately 45 to 55 minutes – not too long if you have small children. I spent the ferry ride watching the waves, listening to my music and searching for whales and dolphins. I have seen sea life on past trips over to Rottnest Island so I’d recommend you keep your eyes peeled just in case!

Arrive & explore

Once we arrived at the Thompson Bay Jetty, I alighted the ferry and was ready to explore the island after a quick visit to the Info Centre. If you're a first time visitor to Rottnest Island you'll want to visit the Information Centre before you begin exploring to ensure you don't miss out on any of the key attractions.
