Roam the wild landscapes of South Australia and embrace the freedom to live life untamed. This immersive camping tour offers a striking contrast of outback and ocean, promising unforgettable experiences. Learn to surf, discover pristine coastlines, see koalas in the wild, and contribute through meaningful conservation work. Sleep under a sea of stars and connect with like-minded travellers as you explore the 540-million-year-old Flinders Ranges, where dramatic gorges, abundant wildlife, and rich Aboriginal history await.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Adelaide to Wallaroo, where you’ll board a morning ferry for a relaxing crossing of the Spencer Gulf to the Eyre Peninsula. After disembarking at Lucky Bay, enjoy a stop in Cowell to explore its unique silo art and grab lunch. Upon arrival in Port Lincoln (Galinyala), you'll receive a heartfelt Welcome to Country from proud Barngarla woman Emmalene Richards, offering a deep connection to the land. You'll then set up camp at Mikkira Station Koala Sanctuary, a private property home to wild koalas, kangaroos, and emus. Enjoy dinner cooked by your guide and sleep under the vast South Australian stars.
Spend your day exploring the breathtaking Coffin Bay National Park, renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches and abundant wildlife. You have the Optional Extra to join a Coffin Bay Oyster Farm Tour (additional cost): wade into the clear waters, learn about oyster farming from local experts, and taste fresh oysters straight from the ocean – a true sensory delight. For those not participating in the oyster tour, you can explore the Oyster Trail, relax at Oyster HQ with a coffee and a view, or simply enjoy the national park's beauty. Later, enjoy some free time in Port Lincoln, with an optional wine tasting at Boston Bay Wines, known for its stunning coastal views, before returning to camp at Mikkira Station.
Start the day with a two-hour surf lesson at Fisheries Bay—or relax on the beach if you prefer.
In the afternoon, contribute to a meaningful conservation volunteering project at Brinkworth Reserve, supported by the National Trust of South Australia. Activities vary by season but may include planting trees, weeding, or seed collection.
Return to camp via Lincoln National Park and Wanna Lookout for sunset views.
Say goodbye to the coast as you travel inland today, transitioning from the ocean's edge to the rugged heart of the Outback. You’ll stop for lunch and to admire more unique silo art in Port Augusta before reaching the ancient landscapes of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. This area is not only geologically significant, boasting formations over 540 million years old, but also renowned for its breathtaking stargazing opportunities due to its clear, dark skies. Stretch your legs with a hike along the Arkaroo Rock Trail, a culturally significant site for the Adnyamathanha People, featuring ancient Aboriginal rock art. You'll then set up camp at Wilpena Pound Resort for another night under the stars, surrounded by dramatic scenery.
Begin your day with a breathtaking Wilpena Pound sunrise, a truly iconic moment in the Flinders Ranges. Following this, experience a Welcome to Country by Adnyamathanha man and Park Ranger John from Ngai Nhina Yuras, who will lead a fascinating cultural walk. Learn through stories of bush food, traditional artefacts, and ancient practices of the Traditional Owners, gaining a deeper understanding of this sacred land. Spend the afternoon as you wish: swimming in the resort pool, relaxing at the resort, or further exploring more of the dramatic Flinders Ranges landscapes.

To fully enjoy our adventure tours, participants should have a love for the outdoors and hiking and be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Our guides work hard to ensure a great experience and may occasionally need assistance. We kindly ask guests to contribute by helping with tasks such as meal preparation and packing up camp.
A moderate level of fitness is required, as some walks range from 2 to 9 kilometres over uneven or potentially wet terrain.
Please advise us of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking. While we aim to provide fresh, varied meals, please note that snacks, soft drinks, and alcohol are not included.
Due to limited trailer space, luggage is restricted to one 15 kg backpack or soft travel bag per person, plus a small piece of hand luggage for the bus.
This tour requires a minimum of four participants to operate. In the unlikely event that minimum numbers are not met, we will transfer any payments made to a future departure. If that is not suitable, a full refund will be issued.
Itinerary changes may occur to ensure the best possible experience. Australia’s weather can be unpredictable, and our experienced guides always prioritise safety. Any changes will be communicated to the group as early as possible.
All passengers must complete online check-in, including a mandatory ‘Fit for Travel’ self-declaration confirming they are illness-free. This must be completed no later than 24 hours before departure.
Camping is at a mix of national parks and designated campgrounds, all of which include basic toilet and shower facilities.
Please note that Mikkira Station may be unavailable during high fire danger periods (typically November to March). In such cases, we will camp at an alternative site such as Bay View Park, which also has one toilet and one shower.
For camping, we use single swags – traditional Aussie bed rolls made from durable canvas with an inbuilt mattress.
We recommend bringing your sleeping bag and pillow to use with the swag. However, if needed, you can:
Purchase a new 0-degree sleeping bag for $50, or
Hire a used sleeping bag for $20.
These options must be added to your cart when booking. Donated sleeping bags go to a homeless charity, giving them a second life.
In the event of wet weather, shared tents will be provided for group use.
In rare cases of extreme weather, we may arrange alternative accommodation. If this occurs, the cost will be shared 50/50 between Untamed Escapes and each passenger.
The Coffin Bay Oyster Tour can be added at the time of booking.
If you wish to join the Day 2 alternative itinerary for a sea lion experience with Calypso Star Charters, please contact them directly to check availability and make a booking.
