Day 1: Alice Springs

The adventure begins as you board the train at midday in Alice Springs. As the journey unfolds, soak in the stark beauty of the outback while enjoying the luxurious comforts of your cabin, exquisite dining options, and the opportunity to mingle with fellow travellers. After dinner, the train stops in the heart of the desert, offering a breathtaking view of the night sky—a black velvet expanse illuminated by a billion sparkling stars. The outback sky is a sight you must see to believe.

Please note: Off-train excursions are not included for guests starting their journey in Alice Springs. However, you may choose to join an excursion for an additional cost.

Select one tour from options 1 to 6 (available at an extra cost).

1. A Town Called Alice (Included in Fare*)

Begin your day at the Alice Springs School of the Air, the world’s largest classroom. Established in 1951, this school spans an incredible 1.3 million square kilometres and continues to operate today. It was the first school to use two-way radio broadcasts to educate students in remote areas who couldn’t attend face-to-face lessons. With some luck, you may even witness a live class in action.

Next, visit the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, where you'll enjoy an engaging presentation about the region’s fascinating scaly residents. Meet local icons like frill-necked lizards, thorny devils, perentie goannas, and geckos.

Please continue to the Yubu Napa Gallery, showcasing high-quality artworks created by artists who work in comfortable studios and are paid fairly for their creations.

Wrap up the day with a coach tour highlighting the rich history and vibrant culture of Alice Springs, an iconic outback town brimming with character.

Recommended Fitness Level:

  • Moderate mobility required: Guests must climb coach stairs multiple times, with short periods of walking and standing.
  • Weather-appropriate attire is encouraged, including enclosed sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and long sleeves.

*Platinum and Gold Service guests starting their journey on The Ghan in Alice Springs are required to pay $100 per person.

2. Desert Park (Included in Fare*)

As unique as the Australian desert itself, the Alice Springs Desert Park captivates visitors while offering an educational experience. Nestled at the base of the West MacDonnell Ranges, the park is deeply connected to the local Arrernte people, sharing their stories, culture, and custodianship of the land. Explore three distinct desert habitats—Desert Rivers, Sand Country, and Woodland—each showcasing the relationship between the Arrernte people and the plants and animals of the region.

Highlights of the visit include:

  • The Nocturnal House: On your guided walk, step into a darkened space that mimics evening light, allowing you to spot animals such as the bilby and the rare mala wallaby in a recreated natural environment.
  • Raptors in Flight: Experience the thrill of an aerial display as desert raptors fly overhead, demonstrating their hunting and survival skills. After the show, enjoy a behind-the-scenes experience with the birds and trainers during a private training session.

The day continues with a visit to the Yubu Napa Gallery in Alice Springs. This gallery is dedicated to showcasing exceptional artwork while ensuring artists work in comfortable studios and are paid fairly for their contributions.

Finish your exploration with a coach tour of Alice Springs, highlighting the unique history and vibrant culture of this iconic outback town.

The Simpsons Gap area is a truly magical location where the unique interplay of flora, fauna, and Indigenous culture creates an unforgettable experience. The area features extensive stands of Mulga trees and is a vital refuge for over 40 rare plant species.

On this walk, you’ll encounter native flora, including ancient Ghost Gums, and take in stunning views of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Known as Rungutjirpa to the Arrernte people, the Simpsons Gap holds deep spiritual significance as the mythological home of giant goanna ancestors. Multiple Dreaming trails and stories converge at this sacred site. Marvel at the peaceful beauty of the canyon walls as they glow with reflected sunlight, offering a striking display of colour and form.

Recommended Fitness Level:

  • High mobility required: Approximately 5km of walking over rocky and natural terrain.
  • Weather-appropriate attire is essential: Enclosed sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat, trousers, and long sleeves are strongly recommended.

4. Cycle Alice (Included in Fare*)
(Limited Availability)

Pedal your way along a scenic trail to the famously dry Todd River, where you'll immerse yourself in the stunning Alice Springs countryside. The tour takes you along the Ilentye Trail—an Indigenous word, pronounced ee-LINDGE, meaning "Galah."

After a leisurely cycle on the ochre-hued dirt paths, your guide will lead you to a picturesque spot along the sandy riverbed, where you can take a moment to absorb the incredible landscape. Continue your ride along the Ilentye Trail, which runs parallel to the rugged terrain home to black-footed rock wallabies, often seen navigating the rocks.

Your guide will take you into White Gums Station, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the outback, take in the MacDonnell Ranges, and bond with your gentle camel team before embarking on a 45–60 minute ride aboard the ‘ships of the desert’—the same mode of transport once used by outback settlers.

Visit the Camel Lounge to learn about these fascinating creatures and browse a selection of souvenirs. Manguri

Not a formal Off-Train Experience, but one we love to include when possible! Magnificent Manguri is a rail siding located 30 minutes outside Coober Pedy, South Australia. At this stop, the vast outback sky is free from man-made light pollution, offering an unparalleled view of the stars.

We pull into Manguri after dinner and invite guests to step off the train for a nightcap around a bonfire. The brilliant carpet of stars overhead creates a truly magical moment in an area you’re unlikely to find yourself in at any other time.
