Tour Itinerary (9.5 hours):

8 am: We’ll kick off our day at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (20 Davey Street). From there, we’ll head into the southern Midlands farming district, making our way to the charming historic highland town of Bothwell. We’ll take a break so you can grab a hot drink to start the day right.

Our journey continues with a visit to the 1916 Waddamana hydropower station, where you’ll discover the fascinating story of its rise and dramatic fall. You’ll have the chance to chat with David, who used to work in the power industry, adding a personal touch to your experience.

Next, we’ll travel to the trout fishing community of Flintstone, named after the local geology. As we take in the sight of the mighty Arthurs Lake, you’ll learn the intriguing tale of how two lakes became one and the surprising path its waters take. We’ll stop at the Arthurs Lake Roadhouse for a warm lunch, which you can purchase on the spot.

After lunch, we’ll ascend to the southern end of the massive Great Lake, where the Miena Dam holds back its vast waters. We’ll then set off on a short walk to investigate whether Reynolds Island, the lake’s largest island, is really an island. Following that, enjoy a scenic drive along the lake shore and up the bends to The Great Lake Lookout, where you’ll be treated to a breathtaking bird’s-eye view and a chance to breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Our next adventure is a short stroll to the pristine Pine Lake, nestled in a forest of rare pencil pines that only grow in Tasmania. David will help bring this unique landscape to life with his knowledge from studying botany, geology, and the region’s rivers and lakes at the University of Tasmania.

We’ll then make our way to the Liffey Forest Lookout, where you can witness the steep rocky escarpment and take in the fresh scent of the leafy rainforest. Here, the central Plateau high country dramatically drops away towards the north.

As the day winds down, we’ll journey back through the historic Midlands town of Kempton, where you can admire its beautiful heritage buildings. We’ll return to the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre around 5:30 pm, just in time for dinner, carrying with us the unforgettable memories of Tasmania’s High Country.
