As the journey continues, glide through the stunning MacDonnell Ranges before arriving in Alice Springs (known locally as The Alice) in the afternoon. Here, choose from a range of unique off-train experiences to immerse yourself in this remote and remarkable outback town.
Note: Off-train excursions are included for guests breaking their journey in Alice Springs but are not included for those ending their journey there.
While not a formal Off Train Experience, this stop is a bonus that we include whenever possible!
You may not have heard of the outback town of Marla before, but it’s well worth the early start to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the South Australian desert landscape. Located closer to Alice Springs than Adelaide, Marla is nearly 1,000 kilometres into the journey.
The train arrives in the dark, allowing guests to step off, stretch their legs, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as the first light of day slowly illuminates the surrounding outback. Start your morning with a steaming mug of coffee and a bacon and egg roll during this short 45-minute stop.
Take a moment to soak in the stillness before re-boarding the train, where you can even hop back into bed if you wish! Brunch will be served from 10 a.m.
Please note: This stop is available only on northbound journeys from Adelaide to Darwin.
Guests may choose one tour from options ②, ③, ④, ⑤, ⑥, ⑦, or ⑧ at an additional cost.

Next, visit the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, where you'll enjoy an engaging presentation about the fascinating reptiles of the region. Meet local favourites, including frill-neck lizards, thorny devils, perentie goannas, and geckos, as you learn about these scaly inhabitants of the outback.

As captivating as the desert itself, the Alice Springs Desert Park offers a unique blend of education and immersion. Situated at the base of the West MacDonnell Ranges, the park is deeply connected to the culture and history of the local Arrernte people. Highlights of the day include a guided walk through the Nocturnal House, where you can observe creatures like the bilby and the rare mala wallaby in their natural environment, as your eyes adjust to the dim evening light.
Next, experience the thrill of an aerial display featuring raptors of the desert sky. Feel the rush as free-flying birds of prey swoop overhead, demonstrating their remarkable hunting and foraging skills. After the show, a backstage pass provides the opportunity to meet the birds and their trainers during a private training session.
