Tour Overview
Today’s itinerary is action-packed and full of variety. The day begins early with a scenic drive from Hobart to the magnificent Tasman Peninsula—an area rich in history, fascinating stories, and dramatic coastal scenery. This region is home to Australia’s highest sea cliffs, and the first stop at Pirate’s Bay Lookout offers sweeping views of the coastline and surrounding landscape.
Passing through Eaglehawk Neck and “The Dogline,” the guide will share captivating stories about this area’s convict past before arriving at the start of one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks—the Waterfall Bay Cliff Top Track. This easy 45-minute walk follows an undulating coastal path with spectacular ocean views, ending at the remarkable rock formations of Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen.
Next, the tour visits the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo, where guests can witness the thrilling spectacle of a devil feeding—complete with snarls, growls, and crunching jaws. There’s also an opportunity to hand-feed friendly wallabies and explore the native flora and fauna within this innovative “Unzoo” setting.
The journey continues to the Port Arthur Historic Site, one of Australia’s most significant heritage landmarks. Entry includes a guided introductory walk, a 20-minute harbour cruise around the Isle of the Dead, and access to “The Port Arthur Experience” podcast, which offers insightful commentary about the site’s dark convict history. With approximately 2.5 hours to explore, visitors can wander through the main penitentiary, solitary confinement cells, and numerous other preserved buildings in this UNESCO World Heritage-listed open-air museum.
On the return journey to Hobart, the tour stops at the charming historic village of Richmond. Guests can stroll along quaint streets, enjoy a coffee, browse local shops and chocolatiers, and walk across Australia’s oldest bridge still in use—a convict-built sandstone structure steeped in legend and said to be haunted.
The tour concludes with an evening arrival back in Hobart around 6:00 pm.
Departs: Launceston 7:30 am
Returns: Launceston 6:00 pm
Overnight: Launceston (accommodation by own arrangement)
Highlights:
Cradle Mountain National Park offers some of Tasmania’s most iconic scenery, with a wide range of walking trails to suit different interests and abilities. With around five hours to explore this World Heritage-listed wilderness, the walking itinerary remains flexible to suit both guests and the day’s weather conditions.
Departing Launceston, the journey begins with a short stop in Sheffield — the renowned Town of Murals. Nestled in the foothills of the mountains, this charming rural village is Tasmania’s own outdoor art gallery, featuring more than 100 murals painted across its buildings. The artwork tells the story of the Cradle Mountain region and sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
On arrival at Cradle Mountain National Park, the group prepares for a day of discovery, with around four to five hours to enjoy the park’s natural beauty. The adventure begins with one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks — the Enchanted Walk — an easy 20-minute circuit that follows Pencil Pine Creek and offers a gentle introduction to the area.
From there, the main hike begins at Dove Lake, with two walking options available. The iconic Dove Lake Circuit is a 6-kilometre track, graded as easy and typically taking two to three hours. This premier Tasmanian walk loops around Dove Lake beneath the towering Cradle Mountain, passing through diverse alpine vegetation such as button grass, myrtle, sassafras, deciduous beech (fagus) and King Billy pine.
For those seeking a more active challenge, the Marion’s Lookout track offers a 4-kilometre medium-grade hike with some steep sections. At 1,200 metres above sea level, the lookout provides breathtaking 360-degree views across the surrounding World Heritage wilderness.
Throughout the day, there are opportunities to stop for lunch, relax beside a quiet stream, spot the famous Cradle wombats in their natural habitat, or capture the dramatic landscapes on camera. The tour also includes a visit to Weindorfer’s Chalet and the Weindorfer’s Forest Walk, where ancient King Billy pines stand as a testament to Tasmania’s rich natural heritage.
On the return journey to Launceston, the group stops at Van Diemen’s Land Ice Creamery and Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm — the perfect way to refresh and refuel after a day in the mountains.
The tour returns to Launceston around 6:00 pm, concluding the Big 3 adventure!
All prices are listed in Australian dollars (AUD).
