Join us on a bushwalking trek adventure along sections of the spectacular Larapinta Trail located in the heart of Central Australia. Explore the wonder of West MacDonnell Ranges, Euro Ridge, Mount Sonder, Ormiston Gorge, and Ellery Creek.

Experience the rugged beauty of the West MacDonnell Ranges on the Larapinta Trail, one of Australia’s most popular wilderness walks. Covering up to 14 km of the graded trail daily, there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy the Australian outback. Be swept away by the Dreamtime of this ancient environment and discover the magic and mysteries hidden within.

Day 3: Section 10 - Ormiston Gorge to Glen Helen Gorge

Today, we traverse the low-lying regions surrounding Ormiston Gorge, gradually working our way upward into the back reaches of the Finke River. This area is steeped in traditional folklore, with several important sites being viewed, including ‘Yapulpa’, which is part of the Carpet Snake Dreaming legend and the Emu and Kangaroo Man Dreaming. If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim. Tonight, relax at our beautiful permanent campsite as the sun sets and the colours of the night desert erupt into a million-star accommodation.

  • Driving Distance: approx. 27km.
  • Hiking Distance and Grading: 11km (Section 10), Grade 3 – moderate.

Day 4: Section 12 - Mount Sonder Climb

An early rise is an understatement (approx. 3 am trek start) as we challenge the 8km climb to the peak of Mount Sonder. The vision of sunrise and the 360° view will leave you speechless – a truly unforgettable achievement. Afterwards, enjoy a well-deserved cooked Aussie breakfast at camp. Spend the afternoon at your leisure at camp or Ormiston Gorge before enjoying one last evening under the stars of the Milky Way in our beautiful, remote campsite.

  • Accom: Private and remote West MacDonnell Ranges permanent campsite; Safari Tents, or Bush Swags.
  • Driving Distance: approx. 64km.
  • Hiking Distance and Grading: 16km (Section 12), Grade 5 – difficult.

Day 5: Section 9/10 - Ormiston Pound Walk to Alice Springs

Regarded by many as the ‘primo’ small walk of the Larapinta Trail, the Ormiston Pound Walk is full of wow factor, wildlife and flora and a grand finale to our walk. A location inspirational to Albert Namatjira, sensational views of the Chewing’s Range and Mount Giles – the entry into the Gorge will leave you dumbfounded. After a last picnic lunch at Ormiston gorge, we will pack and break camp for regrettably the last time and begin our journey back to normality (hot showers and life as you know it await).

Tonight, after a well-deserved shower, make your way to one of Alice’s Outback Restaurants (your guide will confirm the time and location), where you can reminisce about the last 5 days and share some banter over a refreshing ale or cool drink.

**Please note, days of the itinerary can be swapped due to operational reasons. Additionally, contrasting weather conditions, including heavy rain, extreme temperatures, as well as changeable road conditions, can prevent us from travelling on some of our advertised routes. In any case, your expert guides will ensure that the most amazing adventure is had by all!

Tour Exclusions

  • Sleeping bags can be hired onboard for AUD 45, which includes cleaning costs. You're also welcome to bring your own. Payment is made directly to the tour operator.

  • Any meals not specifically listed in the itinerary are at your own expense. For guests with special dietary requirements, we recommend bringing additional snacks, as options can be limited in remote areas.

  • Hotel transfers before and after the tour (outside of the included itinerary pickup/drop-off) are not included. Guests must make their way to the nominated departure point.

  • Strongly recommended for all participants to cover unforeseen circumstances.

  • Any personal purchases or expenses incurred during the tour are not included.

Things to Note

Passenger Information

  • Mandatory passenger details are required at the time of booking, including a contact phone number and any relevant dietary requirements.

  • Passengers must notify the tour operator of any medical conditions that could affect participation in the tour. Please provide this information at the time of booking or at least a few days before departure.

Fitness & Participation

  • This tour includes up to 70 km of walking, with daily distances ranging from 11–16 km over uneven, steep, and rocky terrain, often in direct sunlight and varying weather conditions.

  • A moderate to high level of fitness is required. Participation in walks is at the guide’s discretion for safety reasons.

  • Guests aged over 70 years must provide a doctor’s certificate at least 30 days before travel.

  • This tour is not suitable for mobility-impaired travellers or those requiring wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers.

Luggage Requirements

  • Due to limited storage space, travellers must bring only:
    • 1 x soft travel bag (15–20 kg)
    • 1 x daypack (5–8 kg)

  • Large suitcases or oversized bags can be left at your accommodation in Alice Springs.

Travel Conditions

  • A minimum of 6 passengers is required for the tour to operate. If the minimum is not met, you will be offered an alternative date or a credit transfer.

  • All passengers must sign a liability waiver before departure. Copies are available on request.

Acceptance of Risk

  • The Larapinta Trail is a remote wilderness experience with extreme temperatures and limited access to emergency services.

  • In the event of injury, evacuation times may vary significantly.

  • All travel is undertaken at the passenger’s own risk.

  • We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance.

  • 3–5L refillable water bladder

  • Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

  • Swimwear, towel, and toiletries (wet wipes recommended)

  • Sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes

  • Lightweight, all-weather, quick-dry clothing

  • Thermal layers for cold nights and early mornings

  • Head torch with spare batteries (essential)

  • Personal first-aid kit

  • Insect repellent and a fly/mosquito net (especially for summer)

  • Reusable zip-lock bag for snacks (for sustainability)

  • Rechargeable power bank (no power access at camp)

  • Camera and spare batteries/memory

  • Optional: sleeping bag and pillow (if using a swag)

  • Money for snacks or additional meals

  • Extra snacks (e.g., energy bars, nuts, dried fruit)

Cancellation Policy

Free Cancellation if cancel outside 30days. No refund if cancel within 30days.
Noticed: If you would like to cancel, please kindly email us to cancel the tour at least 2 business days prior to this cancellation period. Once cancellation is confirmed, you will receive your refund within 7-28 business days.
Cancellation notification needs to be formally replied receipt by us during our office hours as acknowledgement.

NOTE: FIT TRAVEL would adopt suppliers' cancellation policy. Cancellation fees, if any by the suppliers, will be charged according to the supppliers' cancellation policy ( FIT TRAVEL does not charge additional cancellation fees ).
With this specific product's cancellation policy, the suppliers reserve the right of final interpretation.
