Embark on a fantastic 3-day, 2-night self-drive family adventure to Kangaroo Island, based at the delightful Al-Pac-Em Inn just outside Kingscote. This package combines stunning coastal scenery, beautiful beaches, and unique wildlife encounters, offering something for every member of the family.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island & Al-Pac-Em Inn Farm Stay

Begin with an early morning departure from Adelaide (coach or self-drive), taking in the scenic Fleurieu Peninsula as you make your way to Cape Jervis. Board the SeaLink ferry service for the crossing to Kangaroo Island. Once on the island, collect your hire car, which is included as part of your package. Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third-largest island, is over 155km in length and 55km wide, offering spectacular coastal scenery, beautiful beaches, and fantastic National Parks.

Your accommodation for the next two nights is Al-Pac-Em Inn, a modern holiday house located just outside Kingscote. Designed for comfort and relaxation, it can sleep up to eight people, with children under three staying free of charge. The inn features a fully appointed kitchen, BBQ facilities, a washing machine, reverse cycle air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and DVD player, with all linen provided. The secure yard offers a private and restful setting for guests to unwind while children play safely. Children will particularly enjoy interacting with the wonderful farm animals, including miniature ponies, cows, goats, pigs, chickens, and the always entertaining alpacas. In spring, you may even have the opportunity to bottle-feed orphaned baby lambs (when available) or hand-feed Kate the Clydesdale.

Day 2: Wildlife Encounters & Sand Dune Thrills

Today, immerse yourselves in Kangaroo Island's incredible wildlife and natural attractions. Visit Raptor Domain, one of KI's popular attractions, and take up their Twin Offer. Experience the unique and entertaining "Free Flight" presentation, the only one of its kind in South Australia, where you'll meet an array of birds including Jedda, the majestic Wedge-Tailed Eagle, Casper the friendly Barn Owl, and Banjo and Clancy, the laughing Kookaburras. Following this, enjoy the Fang-Tastic Venom/Reptile Show, where you'll encounter a variety of reptiles, including some of Australia’s venomous creatures, and learn fascinating facts about Australian reptiles.

Later, head to Little Sahara, an area of spectacular white sand dunes surrounded by bush vegetation. Grab your sandboard and toboggan and climb to the top of the razorback ridges for a thrilling ride down to the bottom. For an optional adrenaline rush, you can also experience the thrill of quad biking on a Quad Bike Discovery Tour with KI Outdoor Action (additional cost, typically from around $177 per rider for an 80-minute tour).

As an additional option (not included in the package), you might choose to explore the wonders of Seal Bay Conservation Park. Here, you can embark on a guided beach walk with an experienced park ranger to be amongst a colony of rare and wild Australian sea lions – a truly amazing and unforgettable experience (additional cost, typically around $42 per adult for the guided tour).

Day 3: Island Exploration & Departure

Enjoy your final morning on Kangaroo Island. With your hire car, you have the flexibility to revisit a favourite spot or explore something new that captured your interest. Perhaps enjoy some more time with the animals at Al-Pac-Em Inn or discover a local township. In the afternoon, you will make your way back to the Penneshaw SeaLink Ferry Terminal to drop off your hire car before boarding your return ferry service to Cape Jervis, and then continue your journey back to Adelaide by coach or your own vehicle if you self-drove.
