Step back in time to Australia’s oldest and best-preserved heritage steam railway, Puffing Billy, situated in the picturesque Dandenong Ranges and only 60-minutes from Melbourne CBD.

With lush fern gullies brushing past the open side carriages and Mountain Ash trees towering overhead, Puffing Billy Railway makes for a wonderful opportunity to relax and breathe in the fresh air whilst the train makes its way through the temperate rainforest.

Visitors can enjoy traveling on board Puffing Billy as a stand-alone experience with the excitement beginning at Belgrave Station or start the adventure from Lakeside Station, riding over the rolling hills, across iconic timber trestle bridges, and through the open farmlands that surround Gembrook Station.

With the return of the iconic, decades-old tradition of dangling your legs from Puffing Billy’s traditional open carriages, passengers can once again experience the true thrill of sitting on the carriage sill from Belgrave to Lakeside, Belgrave to Gembrook, and Belgrave to Menzies Creek.

Nestled amongst the towering rainforests of the Dandenong Ranges sits Puffing Billy Railway’s new state-of-the-art Lakeside Visitor Centre. Featuring a modern café with the best produce on offer in the region, a dedicated gift shop featuring locally designed treasures, and a gallery of steam artifacts in the Lakeside Hall, the Visitor Centre offers guests a cultural hub with world-class facilities. Open daily with free entry to passengers and visitors.

Free for all train ticket holders, passengers can also explore the Menzies Creek Museum – home to more than 80 railway-related exhibits, including rare operational steam and diesel locomotives, an operational boiler house that services steam engines, and the Little Toot Café for all your morning tea needs.

Whether it’s an energetic adventure, a touch of nostalgia, or cultural experiences, there is something for everyone at Puffing Billy Railway.

－For those taking public transport, you can take the Melbourne Metro train to Belgrave Station, then check in and transfer to the Puffing Billy Vintage train.

  • Children's tickets are for passengers aged 4–15. Please book Adult tickets for passengers aged 16 years old and above
  • Admission is free for children below 4; please indicate the number of children and their ages in the Requests & Remarks section when booking and presenting passports for age verification. Failure to do so may result in non-admission. Please note upon arrival at Puffing Billy Railways Belgrave station you will be asked to confirm your child’s age at the booking office
  • Children under 4 years of age are not permitted to sit on the carriage sills and will be given a red wristband to indicate ride restriction
  • The age of any child between the ages of 4-13yrs who will be sitting on the sills during their train journey will need to be recorded. The purpose of collecting this information is to ensure children are allocated the correct wristband colour for a safe journey
  • Adult supervision is required for children 4-13 years of age when sitting on the carriage sill – this means a maximum of 2 supervised children per adult within arm’s reach
  • Supervised children between 4-13 years of age will be given a green wristband to wear. This indicates the child’s age and helps the friendly conductors know that all children are being correctly supervised
  • Wheelchair-accessible seats on the train are available but limited; please indicate such requests in the Note section when booking
