Mt Field National Park is one of Tasmania’s oldest and most loved national parks. Best known for the spectacular Russell Falls and the towering giants of the Tall Trees track, the park is explored through a series of short, easy walks. From here, the journey continues to a wildlife sanctuary before making a side trip to the summit of Kunanyi / Mt Wellington, overlooking Hobart.
Wilderness, Waterfalls & Wildlife! Stroll among the giants on the Tall Trees track, marvel at the beauty of Russell Falls, encounter native animals at a wildlife sanctuary, and end the day with sweeping views of Hobart and beyond from the summit of kunanyi / Mt Wellington.
Mt Field National Park offers a variety of walks in one of Tasmania’s oldest and most treasured reserves. Just a short 1.5-hour drive from Hobart, it is best known for the spectacular Russell Falls and the towering giants of the Tall Trees Track. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore some of the park’s best short walks at your own pace.
The Three Falls Circuit and Tall Trees Walk form a loop through the lush lower rainforest. Covering 6km of reasonably easy terrain, the circuit showcases the park’s highlights – Russell Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Lady Barron Falls, and the Tall Trees Track. Depending on your energy levels and sense of adventure, you can complete just one waterfall, two, or the full circuit.
We begin with an easy and scenic walk to Russell Falls – Tasmania’s most recognisable and most photographed waterfall. Its striking three-tiered drop makes for an unforgettable sight. From here, a short climb leads to the enchanting Horseshoe Falls, tucked away in the forest and often considered even more beautiful than Russell Falls.
The walk continues into the Tall Trees Track, where giant Swamp Gums tower up to 80 metres above – the tallest flowering plants on Earth. For those who are keen, the adventure can continue to Lady Barron Falls to complete the full circuit. Alternatively, return to the starting point for a shorter, more relaxed walk.
A leisurely picnic lunch is enjoyed in one of the park’s picturesque settings before the journey continues.
Next is a visit to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll meet a variety of native animals. Learn about Tasmania’s rare and endangered species during an engaging and informative tour with the sanctuary’s expert staff.
The day concludes at the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, rising 1,271 metres above Hobart. On clear days, the panoramic views stretch across the city, the Derwent River, and the surrounding mountains. Whether it’s the icy air or the breathtaking scenery that brings tears to your eyes, this is a spectacular way to end the day – combining rainforests, waterfalls, wildlife, and unforgettable Tasmanian landscapes.
