Southwest Tasmania Wilderness Day Tour (Approx. 9.5 Hours)
Join us on the only day tour that delves deep into the heart of Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed Southwest wilderness. Your journey will be guided by David, a local Tasmanian expert whose knowledge and stories will bring this breathtaking landscape to life.
8:00 am – Meet at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (20 Davey Street, Hobart). The tour begins with sweeping views over the Derwent Estuary, Hobart’s northern suburbs, and the surrounding mountain ranges. A brief stop in the historic town of New Norfolk provides the opportunity to pick up lunch and hot drinks from a local bakery.
The journey continues through rolling farmlands and towering eucalyptus forests, entering the edge of Tasmania’s southwest wilderness. At the Creepy Crawly Walk, enjoy a guided walk through a lush temperate rainforest, including some light scrambling over logs as you explore this untouched ecosystem.
Arriving at Lake Pedder, be awed by the dramatically steep mountains blanketed in native button grass. Nestled deep within Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed Southwest Wilderness, the lake offers a peaceful escape. Join a lakeside walk guided by David, who shares in-depth insights into the region’s botany, geology, and water systems. For the brave, there's the chance to dip your feet into the crystal-clear waters.
Pause for lunch and relaxation at the stunning white quartzite sands of Teds Beach, on the edge of Lake Pedder.
Next, visit the Lake Pedder Lookout to take in a spectacular aerial view of the lake and the surrounding glaciated mountain ranges of the Southwest. This peaceful vantage point invites you to pause and take in the natural beauty all around.
Then, explore the Gordon Dam—at 140 metres high, it’s Australia’s tallest dam. Marvel at its immense scale, take photos, soak up the dramatic landscape, or peer down into the gorge 35 stories below—if you’re feeling brave. Surrounded by pristine temperate rainforest on one side and the expansive Lake Gordon (Australia’s largest water storage reservoir) on the other, the Gordon Gorge is truly a spectacle.
David, who formerly worked with Hydro Tasmania, shares his personal experience and knowledge about the dam’s construction and water capacity. For panoramic views, climb the 185 steps up to the Nob Hill Lookout, which towers high above the dam.
5:30 pm – Return to the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre, arriving in time for dinner with lasting memories of Tasmania’s breathtaking Southwest wilderness.
Please note: The tour duration includes travel time, during which you’ll enjoy scenic views and insightful commentary.
