Southwest Tasmania Wilderness Day Tour (Approx. 9.5 Hours)

Join us on the only day tour that delves deep into the heart of Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed Southwest wilderness. Your journey will be guided by David, a local Tasmanian expert whose knowledge and stories will bring this breathtaking landscape to life.

Itinerary:

• 8:00 AM: Meet at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (20 Davey Street). Begin the tour with sweeping views of the Derwent Estuary, Hobart’s northern suburbs, and surrounding mountains. Stop in historic New Norfolk to pick up lunch and hot drinks at a local bakery.
• Journey through farmlands and tall eucalyptus forests into the wilderness. At the Creepy Crawly Walk, experience a guided walk through temperate rainforest, including a climb over logs, as you explore this pristine environment.
• Marvel at the staggeringly steep mountains covered in native button grass as you arrive at Lake Pedder, nestled in the tranquil heart of Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed Southwest wilderness. Take a lakeshore walk, guided by David’s in-depth knowledge of botany, geology, and water systems. You might even dip your bare feet into the lake's pristine waters.
• Enjoy lunch and relax at Lake Pedder’s white quartzite Teds Beach.
• Visit the Lake Pedder lookout for a stunning bird’s-eye view of the lake and the rugged, glaciated mountain ranges of the Southwest. Breathe in the natural beauty around you.
• Explore the 140-meter-high Gordon Dam, Australia’s highest, and feel dwarfed by its immense scale. Take photos, soak in the scenery, or peer down to the base of the gorge, 35 stories below—if you dare. Experience the dramatic Gordon Gorge, surrounded by untouched temperate rainforest on one side and the vast Lake Gordon, Australia’s largest water storage dam, on the other. David will share his firsthand experience from his time working with Hydro Tasmania, helping to measure the dam's volume. Climb 185 stairs to reach the road and gain an even higher perspective from the Nob Hill lookout, towering over the Gordon Dam.
• 5:30 PM: Return to the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre, arriving in time for dinner, with memories of Tasmania’s Southwest wilderness etched in your mind.
