The Sub Sea Explorer is a custom-built semi-submersible vessel that provides passengers with a unique view of underwater architecture and marine life from below the waterline.

It is the only semi-submersible catamaran operating in Western Australia and cruises within the Tantabiddi Sanctuary Zone on the spectacular Ningaloo Reef.

The vessel comfortably carries up to 30 passengers and two crew members and can be chartered for larger groups, including weddings, corporate functions, birthday celebrations and special events.

The Ningaloo Reef is iconic and world-class, renowned for its corals, diverse fish fauna and abundant marine life. A journey aboard the Sub Sea Explorer is both educational and engaging, offering families a memorable way to learn about the underwater ecology of the Coral Coast.

Guests are taken on an unforgettable journey across Ningaloo Reef without getting their feet wet. The experience includes insights into historic shipwrecks, maritime history and the influence of the Leeuwin Current on local flora and fauna. A wide variety of fish species can be observed, with trained staff available to assist with identification.

Sub Sea Explorer offers walk-on, walk-off access from the Tantabiddi Jetty, allowing guests to remain dry throughout the tour. Once departed and seated comfortably on the lower deck, crew members commence an informative and engaging reef commentary. The coral gardens of the Tantabiddi Sanctuary Area are reached within approximately 5–10 minutes. A crew member is present throughout the tour to answer questions and enhance the below-sea-level viewing experience.

Tour Summary

Guests walk on and off directly from the Tantabiddi Jetty. Upon departure, an informative reef commentary begins as you cruise through the coral gardens en route to the snorkelling site. Snorkelling equipment is provided, with approximately 45 minutes to one hour allocated for snorkelling at a preferred site within the Tantabiddi Sanctuary Area.

Once all guests are back on board, the remaining time is spent exploring favourite bommies and, conditions permitting, searching for larger marine animals such as turtles and reef sharks before returning to the jetty.

Guests can also enjoy uninterrupted coral viewing from the Sub Sea Explorer’s lower deck. Featuring 16 large vertical glass windows positioned below sea level, this iconic Western Australian vessel offers an exceptional and immersive reef viewing experience.

Things to Note

  • Prices are per person and quoted in Australian dollars (AUD).
  • Please arrive at the designated location at least 15 minutes before departure, as the tour will depart on time.
  • Sub Sea Explorer is a semi-submersible catamaran featuring a lower deck positioned below the waterline. This design provides guests with a unique perspective of the reef, creating an immersive experience within the marine environment. Sixteen large viewing windows are positioned along the sides of the hull, offering expansive 360-degree underwater views. Unlike standard glass-bottom boats, which have limited floor-mounted viewing panels, the semi-submersible design allows for a significantly broader and more engaging viewing experience.
  • The vessel travels approximately 800 metres to 1 kilometre from the Tantabiddi Boat Ramp, exploring the protected Tantabiddi Sanctuary Area of Ningaloo Reef.
  • Guests can expect to see a wonderful variety of reef fish and hard corals. Turtles, rays, sharks and larger fish species are commonly sighted, including Queensland groupers, when exploring the deeper waters beyond the coral garden areas.
